About - Burial Ground Monumental Inscriptions

The burial ground is located on the south and east sides of the chapel, there being no memorials west and north of the chapel.

Exact wording is given in double inverted commas, in most instances with forward slashes “/” indicating the ends of lines.

South of the Chapel

1). Headstone. “In loving memory of” Hannah SERLE, died 11 May 1890, aged 52 years. “He giveth the weary rest” And her husband, John SERLE, died 14 January 1908, aged 68 years “I know that my redeemer liveth”.

2). Headstone. “In loving memory of” Charles DARE, "of North Curry/ after a long and painful affliction / he calmly entered into rest” Saturday 18 November 1876, aged 76 years. “Also in loving memory of his wife” Hannah, “who fell asleep” Tuesday 5 March 1876, aged 78 years.

3). Headstone. Robert BOBBETT, “who passed away” 10 July 1891, aged 70 years. “And his beloved wife” Mary Jane, died 4 January 1900, aged 72. "Also their daughter", Sarah Ann BOYLAND, died 15 June 1926, "in New Zealand".

4). Headstone. Elizabeth Joan WESCOMBE, died 23 June 1853, aged 42. “And her husband”, William Elson WESCOMBE, died 22 August 1865, aged 59.

5). Headstone. “In loving memory of” Elizabeth MANLEY, “of Batthills, Cullompton, Devon, who died” 11 December 1890, “at Listock, Fivehead”, aged 82 years.

6). Headstone “All power is / given unto me / in heaven / and in earth / Matt. 28,18” (in two columns, right-hand column is blank). Left-hand column: “Sacred / to the memory of Louisa / daughter of William and Sarah / WESCOMBE, who departed this / life the 31st of December 1835, aged 19 years / ‘she left this earthly station / for this was not her home / to take an heavenly mansion / near her redeemers throne’ / Also in memory of / Mary Aquila WESCOMBE / who departed this life / the 19th of September / 1847, aged 29 years / ‘Precious in the sight of the / Lord is the death of his saints / Psalm 116 15 verse’ ”.

7). Headstone. “Our dear parents” Henry HAWKER, “at rest” 2 December 1887, aged 53, and Ann Sophia HAWKER, “at rest” 6 September 1889, aged 54, of Rock, North Curry “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints”.

8). Headstone. “In loving memory of” Herbert NORMAN who passed away 23 September 1968, aged 75 “at rest”.

9). Sloping Stone. “In loving memory of” Frank BIMSON ‘vic’ died 6 June 1983 aged 67.

10). Headstone. Mary, “wife of” James DAY, died 22 June 1839, aged 36. “And his second wife” Eleanor DAY, died 27 May 1858, aged 63. “Also their husband” James DAY, died 21 December 1882, aged 90. “And his third wife” Mary DAY, died 7 March 1889, aged 82.

11). Headstone. Anna, “wife of” William FRY, “Baptist Minister of this place”, died 29 August 1876, aged 29.

12). Headstone and kerb. “In loving memory of” Essie Maria Bromley MOWL, “widow of Revd. Edwin Mowl/ born 2 May 1865, died 9 November 1936/ for 45 years a labourer / for her master in the / mission field in Jamaica / Well done though good and / faithful servant. Enter thou / into the joy of thy Lord / Matt. 25,21”.

13). Headstone. Mary, “wife of” Philip DYKES, “of Knapp, North Curry”, died 17 October 1881, aged 61. And Philip DYKES, died 12 June 1888, aged 74.

14). Kerb. “In loving memory of my dear husband” Joseph William COX “called home” 17 July 1965, aged 74 years. “And his wife” Annie COX died 12 October 1972, aged 88 years “no pain here”.

17). Headstone. Thomas BRINSON, died 12 June 1891, aged 74. “And his wife” Elizabeth, died March 1900, aged 81. “Also their son” George BRINSON, died 28 February 1976, aged 23.
